What Is Addiction?
Addiction can mean different things to different people, but it generally refers to the repetitive use of a substance or activity, even though it interferes with other aspects of someone’s day-to-day life. It can be understood as a compulsion or a reliance on substance or activity, without which you struggle.
How Does It Work; Physical vs Psychological Dependence.
Addictions can be physical or psychological.
Physical addictions involve a physical dependence; over time, tolerance builds up and more of the substance will need to be taken to feel the same effects and giving up will cause strong withdrawal symptoms. Drug and alcohol dependence such as cigarettes and strong painkillers are examples of physical addictions.
Psychological addictions come from an emotional or psychological desire. Although cravings come from the brain, they can feel just as strong as physical dependencies, so feelings of withdrawal, insomnia and irritability can all be produced by the brain. Sex, shopping, exercise, gaming and gambling are just some examples of psychological addictions.
The Aim of Addiction Counselling
Counselling helps people look at why they are using drugs or drinking alcohol, ultimately aiming to address any associated issues. Most importantly, specialist drug and alcohol counselling will equip you with useful strategies for dealing with life’s challenges in ways that enhance your health and well-being, rather than just masking any underlying feelings, moods or stress you’re experiencing. This will ultimately aim to assist you in controlling your addiction.
Addiction Counselling’s Benefits to Your Family
Addiction affects your whole life including your relationships. It can often cause people to withdraw from their family and feel as though they can’t rely on them – but addiction counselling can help. Not only can it help repair relationships, but it can help your family understand your actions and provide them with resources to assist you on your journey to recovery.
